PDF to test: how to turn documents into assessments
Most teaching material already exists as a PDF: handouts, book chapters, papers, summaries, exported slides. The problem is never a shortage of content — it is turning that content into an assessment, which usually means re-reading everything and writing the questions by hand.

Why start from a PDF rather than a topic
When a test grows out of the material the class actually studied, it measures something different. A test generated from the topic “photosynthesis” assesses what the model knows about photosynthesis in general. A test generated from your handout assesses what was in your handout — including the notation you used, the scope you chose and the examples the class saw.
That difference is the main reason to upload the file instead of describing the subject. The second reason is more mundane: describing a whole chapter well in writing is more work than attaching it.

What is particular about PDFs
Here is the part most guides leave out, and the one that prevents frustration on the first attempt.
Text is read; images are not. A PDF exported from a word processor is read without trouble. A PDF that is a scan of a printed page — or a photo of a book — is, to a computer, an image. If you can select the text with your cursor, the AI can read it too. If you cannot, the material needs to go through text recognition first.
Tables and formulas lose their structure. A table becomes a sequence of values, and a complex equation can arrive mangled. If the central point of the assessment lives in a table or a formula, check the questions that depend on it with extra care — or describe that passage in the brief, as text.
A large document dilutes focus. A 200-page PDF contains far more than you want to assess. Without a scope, the test spreads across the whole material, weighted by how much space each subject takes in the document rather than by how important it was in class. Naming chapters and sections is the single highest-return adjustment.
What is not in the PDF does not get in. The classroom discussion, the local example, the emphasis you placed on one passage: none of that is in the file, so none of it appears on the test. If a point was central in your lesson and marginal in the text, add it to the brief.
Tips for a better result
- Be specific about scope: name chapters, sections or themes for the AI to focus on.
- Choose the question types: multiple choice, true/false, matching, written — and the proportion between them.
- Set the level: easier questions for revision, harder ones for a final assessment. Stating the grade changes the result more than any other parameter.
- Ask for plausible options: obviously wrong distractors hand the answer to anyone who skimmed. Asking for “plausible incorrect options” improves the output noticeably.
- Refine in the conversation: swapping, simplifying or deepening specific questions happens in the same conversation, with no charge per message.
What to review before running it
Two reads, in this order:
The answer key, in full. The shortest step and the only non-negotiable one. One option marked wrong contaminates the whole class’s grades and costs more to undo than the test took to create.
Any fact that came from a table, a formula or a figure. That is exactly where PDF conversion loses information, so that is where errors concentrate. Purely conceptual questions, generated from running text, come out correct far more often.
The general rule holds: the gain is reviewing instead of drafting, not skipping the review.
What happens after the export
The test becomes an ordinary Google Form in your account. You can edit any question, run it with your class and follow responses in the linked spreadsheet in your Google Drive. Nothing is locked in a closed platform — if you stop using FormsFlow, the tests keep working.
